Mixed Fortunes for Birr Youth Sides in Roscrea
29 Mar 2017
In glorious sunshine last Sunday in Roscrea, the U13 & U15 youth sides took to the field to contest a Midland League Final & a Leinster League Semi-final. First up were the U13 boys in the Midland League decider, when they took on a big physical Edenderry team who had lost only 1 of the previous 14 games they contested in all competitions. However the Birr boys were unfazed by their opponents big reputation and went on to deliver a top class performance which saw them come so close to causing a huge upset, losing by 7 points to 5. They were denied a match winning try when in the last moments they counter attacked from their own end line only to be denied by a last ditch tackle in the corner. It was a fantastic game and full credit to an excellent Edenderry side on their victory.
Next up were the U15 boys who were contesting a Leinster League semi-final against the home side Roscrea. This game was also a cracker of a contest which the big crowd enjoyed immensely. All square at 5 points each at the break, the second half was an end to end tussle with no let up until the final whistle. A converted try to the Birr boys shortly after halftime was the deciding factor in this game and despite nonstop pressure from Roscrea the Birr boys held out for a famous win over their neighbours.
